Thiruvachakaam - Sivapuranam

Thiru Manikyavachagar was born in a place called Thiruvadavur to Thiru Sambupada Siruthar and Thirumathi Sivagnanavathi. The name of lord Shiva in this place is Vadapureeshwarar. This place is about 10 kms from Madurai. The King of Madurai at that time was Sri Arimarthana Pandian. He was amazed with Sri Manikyavachakar’s knowledge and decorated him with the name “Thennavan Brahmarayan” and appointed him as his prime minister.

Works composed by Manikyavachakar are collectively called Tiruvachakam. These were not composed at the same time and same place. These were composed at different times and at various places. We can see mention of only Buddhists in his works. So scholars conclude that he belongs to 3rd century AD. During the times of Appar, Sundarar and Sambandar, In addition to Buddhism Samana (Jaina) sects were also getting foothold in south India.

The famous saying about Thiruvachakam, “Thiruvachagattukku urugaar oru vachagattukkum urugaar”, correctly gives a hint about its rhythmic language and choice of words and the spiritual philosophy in an easy to understand language.
Thiruchitrambalam.
